During the global financial meltdown, I questioned this project of painting images from furniture catalogs while people lost their jobs and homes. I'm still conflicted about the "rightness", but revisiting the world in those pages, where nothing had changed, everything still sunny, abundant and flattering, reminded me that they are images of aspiration, materials dreams that are still in play. Just for fewer and fewer. In this context, they signal a loss and a longing that operates like an old family photo, but more a portrait of a collective rather than individual past.
