I've spent way too much time decoding the lyrics of pop songs. Each ptg. in this series is inspired by a specific song title or lyric. The majority of sources are 1960s songs that speak to a passive utopianism that I always associated with living in California. The epitome of this genre is Brian Wilson, the sensitive genius beach boy, who gathered all these yearnings, added melody and harmonies and ended up imprisoned in a paradise of his own making. For me, directives such as "don't worry baby" provide both a zenlike comfort and a disquieting sense that nothing's under your control anyway.
